Gaming PC Questions
What makes a good gaming PC?
A good gaming PC needs the right balance of components for the games and resolution you want to play.
The most important components generally include:
-
CPU (processor) — handles game logic, applications and general processing;
-
GPU (graphics card) — responsible for rendering games and graphical workloads;
-
RAM (memory) — helps the system handle games and multiple applications;
-
Storage — determines how much space you have for Windows, games and files and affects loading performance;
-
Power supply — provides the electrical power required by the system; and
-
Cooling and airflow — helps keep components operating at appropriate temperatures.
The ideal combination depends on your budget and intended use.
How much does a gaming PC cost?
There isn't one fixed price for a gaming PC.
The right budget depends on the games you want to play, your desired graphics settings, monitor resolution, refresh rate and whether you also want to stream or perform other demanding tasks.
We offer systems across a range of budgets, from entry-level machines to high-performance gaming PCs.
Should I buy a pre-built or custom PC?
Both can be excellent choices.
A pre-built PC is ideal if you want a ready-selected configuration without having to choose every component yourself.
A custom-built PC is useful if you have specific requirements or want the components selected around a particular budget or workload.
If you're unsure, contact us and we'll help you decide which option makes the most sense.
Can I customise a PC?
We offer custom-built PCs and can build systems around specific requirements.
If you have a particular CPU, graphics card, amount of RAM, storage capacity, case or other requirement in mind, contact us before ordering if you need advice on compatibility or configuration.
Can I upgrade my PC in the future?
Many desktop PCs can be upgraded.
Common upgrades include:
-
Adding or replacing RAM;
-
Adding additional storage;
-
Upgrading the graphics card;
-
Upgrading other compatible components; and
-
Improving cooling where appropriate.
However, compatibility depends on the specific system.
Our technical support team can advise on suitable upgrades and compatibility.
If you're considering an upgrade to an Alex Davis PCs system, we recommend contacting us before purchasing components.
Can I install my own upgrades?
Customers can upgrade components such as RAM, storage drives and graphics cards without automatically voiding the warranty.
However, damage caused by incorrect installation, unauthorised repairs, physical modifications, BIOS modifications, voltage modifications, excessive overclocking or incompatible third-party components may not be covered by the warranty.
If you're unsure about an upgrade, contact us before installing it.
How much RAM do I need?
The amount of RAM you need depends on what you use your computer for.
Gaming, streaming, content creation, office work and professional applications can all have different requirements.
Rather than choosing RAM based solely on capacity, we recommend considering the complete system configuration and your intended use.
If you're unsure, contact us and we'll help.
How much storage do I need?
This depends on what you intend to install.
Modern games can require substantial amounts of storage, particularly when you have several large titles installed at the same time.
If you intend to store large game libraries, videos, photos or professional files, you may benefit from additional storage.
If you're unsure, let us know what you intend to use the PC for.
Can your PCs run modern games?
Our gaming PCs are designed around a range of gaming requirements, from budget systems to high-performance machines.
Actual performance depends on the specific PC, game, graphics settings, resolution and other factors.
We recommend checking the specifications of the individual PC you're interested in and contacting us if you have a particular game or performance target in mind.
Can I use an Alex Davis PCs gaming PC for streaming?
Yes.
We offer systems specifically aimed at streaming as well as gaming PCs capable of handling streaming workloads.
Streaming performance depends on the game, streaming software, resolution, encoding settings and hardware configuration.
If streaming is important to you, tell us which games you play and what resolution you want to stream at and we'll help you choose an appropriate system.
Do you sell PCs for Fortnite, Minecraft, Call of Duty and other games?
Yes.
We have dedicated PC collections for a range of popular games, including Fortnite, Minecraft, Call of Duty, Valorant, League of Legends and Flight Simulator.
The best PC depends on the game and the performance you want, so don't hesitate to contact us if you need help choosing.
Custom PC Questions
How does a custom PC order work?
A custom PC allows you to build a system around your specific requirements rather than choosing an existing configuration.
You can discuss your requirements with us and we can help determine suitable components.
Once the configuration is agreed and ordered, the PC is assembled, configured and tested before dispatch.
Can I request specific components?
If you have particular components or brands in mind, let us know.
We'll consider compatibility, power requirements, cooling, case dimensions and the overall balance of the system before confirming a configuration.
Will you check that my custom components are compatible?
Yes.
Component compatibility is an important part of building a reliable PC.
We consider factors such as:
-
CPU and motherboard compatibility;
-
RAM compatibility;
-
Graphics card dimensions;
-
Power requirements;
-
Cooling requirements;
-
Storage compatibility; and
-
Case and component dimensions.
If a requested configuration isn't suitable, we'll let you know rather than simply building an incompatible system.
Can I request a specific case or colour?
Where available and compatible with the configuration, specific cases or aesthetic requirements may be accommodated.
If appearance is important to you, mention it when contacting us about a custom build.
Can I upgrade a custom PC later?
Yes, provided the components and platform support the upgrade.
We'll be happy to advise on future upgrades and compatibility.
